Begumpura 2026
acrylics and hand-beading on unstretched canvas, 60"x 60"

Begumpura 60 in by 60 in acrylics and beading on canvas_.png

Drawing on the Sikh concept of Begumpura ("land without sorrow"), this work envisions liberation as an inner state rather than a geographical destination. Presented like a map, with wooden dowels flanking both ends and the hanging string visible, this map is that of the interior. Originating in the poetry of the fifteenth-century Bhakti saint Bhagat Ravidas and embraced within Sikh philosophy, Begumpura imagines a society free from hierarchy, injustice, and suffering. The main figure is rendered in teal (a recurring colour that unites sacred blue with the green of the natural world). This chromatic language serves both as an homage to divine presence and as a reference to the belief that life first emerged from water.
